About Us

In 1968, 20 years after its own establishment, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) founded the Public Relations Student Society of America. The declared purpose of PRSSA is to cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and professional public relations practitioners. Roger Williams was awarded a chapter in 2004.  Since then we have created several annual events, received several awards and have gained statewide attention.  We are the only chapter in Rhode Island.

PRSSA Goals

Understanding of current theories and procedures of the profession

Appreciation of the highest ethical ideals and principles

Awareness of an appropriate professional attitude

Appreciation of Associate Membership in PRSA and eventually accredited membership

Our Mission Statement

To serve our members by enhancing their knowledge of public relations and providing access to professional development opportunities; To serve the public relations profession by helping to develop highly qualified, well-prepared professionals, and in particular Roger Williams University works to make the world a better place through social change.

News

Be on the lookout for our new newsletter this fall. "COMMent" will feature information about PRSSA and the rest of the RWU communications department including public relations, journalism, and global communication students.

PRSSA members are traveliing to Orlando, FL for the annual PRSSA National Conference October 14th - October 18th. These students will spend five days attending workshops, listening to notable PR speakers, and networking at joint PRSA and PRSSA socials. For a glimpse of past conferences, look at our
Flickr page.

Mark your calendars for October 26th! RWU PRSSA will hold a social event for Chapter members at a local corn maze at 3pm. Remember to pay your Chapter dues before this event.

This November make sure to check out the window cases in the main library.  For the entire month, our Chapter will showcase everything PRSSA has been working on so far in addition to glimpses of what is to come for the rest of the year.

Get ready New York City! Fifty PR and marketing students will be heading to NYC on Tuesday November 15th to visit firms to get the students ready for the real world regarding jobs.  This will be the fourth year RWU PRSSA has teamed up with the RWU career center to provide this trip for only $10 per student.  Keep checking back for more information such as where to sign up and what firms we will be visiting.

Sunny LA in winter! Fourteen lucky students will be heading to the West Coast this January as part of an Entertainment PR class.  Here students will complete entertainment PR projects, visit well know firms and mingle with some of the best known names in PR. Additionally, students will go to the Peoples Choice Awards, be part of the audience (on hopefully be a contestant) on the Price is Right and visit movie sets, including the CW network.  More information will be coming soon, so stay tuned!

New RWU student-run PR firm is coming soon!

Bateman Competition

Participating in PRSSA National's annual Bateman competition has become a tradition for our chapter. Every year, our chapter anxiously awaits to begin another year of researching, planning, executing and evaluating a public relations plan on the specific client or issue. This year, the chosen issue is fighting childhood obesity. The team will develop a plan that will help to spread awareness of childhood obesity and potentially jump start the movement to a healthy Rhode Island.

In 2010 we are proud to announce that our Bateman team came in 3rd Place in the nation against 68 other schools.  This year we are working on promoting the brand awareness and financial literacy to low and moderate-income individuals. Our project from last year is available to read by going to the Bateman Competition tab and clicking on the link on the left "The Rhode Counts".
